Off-Road Field Trials Bust the 4×4 vs 6×4 Lines Crane Truck Myths

In the power and energy sector the choice of vehicle is paramount. For years when customers come to Waimea for a specialist lines crane truck, the 4×4 wheelbase has been the perceived standard, for its traction, stability and nimbleness. However, with a growing industry the challenges of payload and manoeuvrability have sparked a critical reassessment that the 4×4 isn’t the only option.
All too often we hear comments about the 6×4, ‘it’s too heavy’, ‘not nimble enough’ or ‘doesn’t have enough traction’. There’s a prevailing mindset that you need a 4×4. These are common misconceptions, but in fact there are several key benefits to using a 6×4 that, depending on your situation, might make it the best option for you.
Recently, we conducted rigorous off-road field trials to directly compare the performance of 6×4 and 4×4 lines crane trucks. So, what is the difference between a 6×4 and a 4×4, besides an additional two wheels?
Significantly Increased Payload: A Game-Changer:
First of all, a 6×4 has a larger wheelbase, with more points of contact between the ground and the six tyres, and can therefore carry a larger legal payload. While a 4×4 payload capacity is 1,980kg, the 6×4 configuration delivers a payload capacity exceeding three times that of the 4×4 at 6,850kg. This increase translates to substantial operational efficiencies, allowing for fewer trips, increased material transport, and enhanced productivity.
Enhanced Manoeuvrability: Navigating Tight Spaces with Ease:
A short wheelbase 6×4 allows the lines crane truck to have a significantly tighter turning compared to a typical 4×4. Since the front wheels are not driving, it’s able to turn incredibly nimbly and navigate tight spots in a way that the four-wheel drive equivalent can’t match. It can easily traverse gates and tight roads as well as making its way into confined worksites with greater precision where necessary for completing the job, minimizing downtime and potential damage.
Impressive Traction and Stability: Challenging the 4×4 Misconception:
Contrary to popular belief, the 6×4 is able to combine the above feature benefits with traction and stability that is comparable and, in some cases, superior to that of the 4×4. The optimized weight distribution and drive axle configuration of the 6×4 provides excellent grip and control across diverse terrains. The 6×4 has great traction and stability when navigating rough, steep, or slippery surfaces, even when paired with the four-wheel drive 4×4.
There are other, more minor but definitely attractive benefits to the 6×4 – for example, a more ergonomic method of cab access that increases ease of use. However, the main drawcards are:
- Significantly increased payload: More than three times that of a 4×4.
- Enhanced manoeuvrability: A much tighter turning circle for those challenging job sites.
- Impressive traction and stability: Comparable, and often superior, to a 4×4.
